November Beer of the Month Club Review

The November Beer of the Month Club selections from Amazing Clubs were Weissbier and Altbier from Prost Brewing Company and Nut Brown Ale and Winter Session Ale from Peak Organic Brewing Company. They featured a variety of tastes and aromas to mix and match with meals that include roasted meats, strong cheeses and chocolate covered treats.

Peak Organic Brewing Company

I started my tasting with Peak Organic ales. The Winter Session was an American Dark Wheat Ale, but the Citra hops gave it an orange-pineapple aroma that stood out as soon as the cap came off of the bottle. This ale was a clear, dark amber color with a minimal, off-white head with very little lacing. The taste was much more malty than I would have thought from the scent of the beer. In addition to the maltiness, there were also notes of toffee, caramel, and bitterness. After the initial smell, the citrus notes actually only reappear as an aftertaste peeking out from behind the malt, banana notes from the yeast, and assertive hops. The Winter Session was smooth and medium bodied but thinner than expected for a wheat ale.

The first thing I noticed about the Nut Brown Ale was it’s transparent dark brown color and thin, quickly dissipating head that which gave this beer the look of a soda poured into a glass. The sweet aroma of nutty malts, dark chocolate, and breadiness, however, foreshadowed the flavors to come. The taste was sweet and nutty with vibrant hops that had a bigger presence than normal for a brown ale. The Nut Brown Ale was medium bodied with a smooth but not quite creamy mouth feel. Overall, it was tasty, and I wouldn’t mind having it again.

Prost Brewing Company

Prost is an award winning brewery that specializes in crafting German beers. Based in Denver, Colorado, this brewery uses 100% German products delivered from overseas. The Altbier poured with a copper color and nice sized yet quickly dissipating head. It had a bready and nutty aroma, and the taste was pretty much the same. Prost stayed true to the style as there is nothing surprising or unexpected about this beer. The Altbier is a simple, light-to-medium bodied, clean drinking ale.

I intentionally saved the best for last when I tried Prost’s Weissbier. This beer has won awards in two years in a row, so I was excited to find out what all the hype was about. Weissbier did not disappoint. This gorgeous Hefeweizen poured a cloudy, but bright gold color with a three-finger eggshell foam head. It smelled of fresh baked bread, strong banana notes, and hints of clove. The banana and clove were also the strongest components of the complex flavor of this beer along with wheat and other fruity flavors like lemon and apricot. The carbonation was very lively, almost like champagne, and the smooth, creamy, medium body made it very pleasant to drink. Out of all the selections in this Beer of the Month delivery, the Weissbier was hands-down my favorite.

Overall

November’s Beer Club shipment came with a variety of selections that I’d be glad to enjoy with a holiday meal or on a Sunday for football. Each beer brought different flavor notes to the table that can be enjoyed in a variety of settings.
