Birch Review

Birch makes mattresses that should appeal to anyone who values natural materials like latex, wool, and organic cotton. It makes cozy, soft, and supportive mattresses that are eco-friendly and don't use fire-retardant chemicals.

TYPES

What bed sizes does Birch offer?

Birch offers mattresses in Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, and California King sizes. Single people may prefer any size bed, starting Twin, Twin XL, or Full sized beds, whereas couples may prefer Queen, King, or California King sizes.

What type of mattresses does Birch offer?

Birch excels at producing high-quality mattresses that people can feel good about sleeping on since they are eco-friendly. They offer two mattress types that both use high-quality natural products while appealing to the majority of sleepers.

Both of Birch's mattresses have a medium-firm firmness level, which will appeal to a broad variety of sleepers. They won't feel too firm that you'll end up with pressure point pain in the morning, but they won't be so soft that you'll sink too far into the mattress for optimal comfort. The two mattress models offered by Birch are:

  • Birch Luxe Natural Mattress: The Birch Luxe Natural Mattress is comfortable for all sleeping positions, including side, stomach, and back. It uses more than 1,000 individual eight-inch steel coils that help limit motion transfer, making this an excellent choice for couples.
  • Birch Natural Mattress: Also comfortable for all types of sleeping positions, the Birch Natural Mattress decreases motion transfer by using hundreds of individual eight-inch steel coils that offer outstanding support.

Which Birch mattress type is best?

Birch knows that everybody has a different budget when shopping for a new mattress. For that reason, it offers two mattresses that work for all kinds of sleepers at varying price points. The Birch Natural Mattress has a lower price point, while the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress is the higher-end mattress offered by Birch. No matter which one you choose, you can expect the same quality craftsmanship and premium materials.

Which sleeping position is best for Birch mattresses?

Both styles of Birch mattresses will work with every type of sleeping position. But if you're overweight and tend to sleep on your stomach, you might find that you sink farther than you'd like into either Birch mattress.

Side and back sleepers should find comfort with either Birch mattress since they are gentle on pressure points.

Which body type is best for Birch mattresses?

People who are underweight or average weight will be comfortable on either Birch mattress because they offer soft support. People who are significantly overweight may find they sink in too far into the Birch Natural mattress for their greatest comfort levels. They'd be better suited by the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress since it has more coils for greater support.

COMFORT

Is a Birch mattress firm or soft?

Both of Birch's mattresses are made to fall right down the middle on the firmness scale. By designing mattresses that have a medium-firm feel, Birch mattresses will appeal to most sleepers.

Medium-firm mattresses especially work well for side sleepers who struggle with pressure point pain on the shoulders and hips when they use mattresses that are too firm. They'll find they are cradled for a cozy night of sleep, and they will either have reduced pain or no pain on their pressure points when they wake up.

Since sleepers won't have to toss and turn all night to relieve their pressure point pain, Birch mattresses may help them sleep better at night and wake up less. That can allow them to feel better rested in the morning, which can lead to a better quality of life.

This firmness level can also offer a great sleep solution for couples, especially if one person likes a firmer mattress and the other one likes a softer mattress. This one will be a middle-of-the-road alternative because it's a good compromise that features both softness and support.

Does Birch provide back support?

Because of the individual coils featured in both models of Birch's mattresses, all sleepers will have enough support to minimize or avoid back pain. The support, coupled with the cozy, soft feel of the mattresses, can help all types of sleepers dodge the back pain that might keep them up at night.

Whether you sleep on your side, stomach, or back, both of Birch's mattresses might help you alleviate any back pain you're experiencing.

Does Birch relieve pain?

Birch mattresses can result in reduced back pain, thanks to the numerous individual eight-inch steel coils placed throughout their mattresses. The coils provide support so stomach and back sleepers can rest comfortably while sleeping, and that extra support can help alleviate back pain by promoting a natural spinal position. The Birch Luxe model is particularly helpful for those who struggle with back pain because it contains targeted zoned lumbar support that can encourage proper spine alignment.

If you've ever woken up with a dull, achy pain or a sharp shooting pain in your hips and shoulders on the side that you're lying on, that is known as pressure point pain. When it comes to relieving pressure point pain in the shoulders and hips for side sleepers, Birch mattresses also excel. Pressure point pain can cause people to wake up in pain numerous times throughout the night, leading to aches and pains in the morning and feelings of fatigue.

To help fight pressure pain, Birch mattresses contain a pressure relief layer made of natural Talalay latex. The comfort layer on the mattresses also helps with pressure point pain. Made of 100 percent organic Birch wool, this layer will give extra cushioning that will last since wool keeps its shape over time because of its natural elasticity.

Stomach and back sleepers who are of average weight or underweight will feel the full effects of a Birch mattress because they will sink in just the right amount for proper spinal alignment. Side sleepers of all sizes will benefit from the pressure point pain relief Birch mattresses can provide.

Does the Birch mattress keep cool at night?

Since one of the primary materials used in Birch mattresses is 100 percent organic Birch wool, sleepers will have access to an all-natural way to stay cooler at night. Birch wool can help with temperature regulation so you stay cooler at night. The organic cotton cover can also help you stay cooler since it's so breathable.

MATERIALS

Birch Construction

Birch mattresses are made up of several carefully constructed layers that each serve a distinct purpose so consumers can have a great sleep experience. The mattresses have a base layer, a support layer, pressure relief layer, a comfort layer, a fire retardant layer, and a cover.

What are Birch mattresses made from?

To help you get an all-natural night of sleep that will be restorative rather than potentially harmful, Birch mattresses use premium, all-natural materials that won't result in harmful off-gassing. They use high-quality organic, Fair Trade cotton, organic wool, natural latex, natural rayon, and individually wrapped steel coils to construct their mattresses.

For those who are worried about what they're breathing in while they sleep, Birch mattresses are both GOTS and GREENGUARD Gold certified. That gives you peace of mind that they don't contain harmful chemicals like fire retardants, pesticides, or any polyurethane foam.

Does the Birch mattresses come in a box?

Birch mattresses are compressed, rolled, and shipped in a box to their customers. Since it's compressed, it will be easy to bring the box into your bedroom, instead of trying to squeeze a large mattress through your doorframe.

Does Birch need a special foundation?

If you like flexibility about whether you should use a foundation and what type you should use, Birch mattresses may be a good fit for you. With either of their mattresses, you won't need to use a foundation if you don't want to, but you can if you want. While they don't require it, using a foundation is strongly recommended.

Birch suggests using a bunkie board that has a box spring or any type of foundation or frame that features flat, firm, and thick slats. If you are using a foundation with slats, Birch says they should be more than five inches apart because it can lead to sagging. If you use slats that are farther apart than five inches, your warranty may not be honored.

If you prefer to use an adjustable base rather than a set foundation, that is allowed. For those who don't already have an adjustable base but want to try one, Birch offers the Helix adjustable base for an additional cost. It uses a remote control and features foot and head massage functions. If you aren't a fan of adjustable bases, Birch also offers the Birch Foundation and a wood frame that will both adhere to the requirements in Birch's warranty.

Caring for your Birch mattress

To keep your mattress feeling balanced, you may rotate your Birch mattress every six months if you want. It isn't a requirement, but it can help your mattress feel fresher and springier. It's especially a good idea to do this is the sleeper falls into the overweight category. You shouldn't flip over your mattress, however, because the layers are placed strategically and will only work with the base layer at the bottom.

If you spill something on your mattress and stain it, you can use a damp sponge and a tiny amount of mild detergent to dab at the stain until it is removed.

CUSTOMER SERVICE

Birch Delivery

Birch mattresses will be delivered to your doorstep in a box which makes it convenient for you to take into your bedroom for an easy setup. Because of COVID concerns, the company has suspended its mattress removal program, so you'll have to dispose of your old mattress yourself, either by giving it away, selling it, or discarding it.

With Birch, you'll get free shipping for new mattresses. If you decide to return it after the trial period, Birch will work with their partners near your location to pick up your mattress so it can be recycled or donated.

Birch Return Policy

While online mattress companies are popular because of their convenience, Birch mattresses aren't available in any store for you to try before you buy one. For that reason, they have a simple return policy if your new mattress doesn't work for you.

They allow consumers to try out their mattresses for 100 nights. Having that long of a sleep trial allows customers to give their bodies a chance to adjust to their new mattress. If you're still not happy with it after your body has had time to adjust to it, you can return it hassle-free. They do require, however, that you try the mattress for at least 30 nights to fully break it in before you decide you don't want to keep it.

If you return it, Birch will do its best to arrange for pick up so the mattress can be recycled or donated. Birch's customer service department can walk you through the process if you have any questions.

Birch Financing Options

Birch offers a limited-time zero percent APR financing through Klarna for customers with high enough credit scores. Even if you don't qualify for zero percent APR financing, you still might receive a low-interest APR offer. They also give customers the option of paying in four interest-free installments on their credit or debit cards.

Birch Warranties

With a 25-year limited warranty, Birch mattresses present a low-risk investment for consumers looking for pain-free sleep. The warranty protects consumers against any manufacturer defects in the workmanship or materials of the mattress.

The first ten years of the warranty give you full coverage against any non-excluded defects. If there is a covered issue, Birch will either replace or repair the mattress, and you won't pay anything.

For the remaining years of the warranty, Birch will replace the mattress, but the consumer will pay a prorated charge. In year 11, the consumer will have to pay 50 percent of the original purchase price to get a replacement mattress. That increases each year by five percent until the 20th year. During the 21st year or after, the prorated charge will be 95 percent of the original purchase price.
